Hey, fediverse

If you had to decide between A and B – what would YOU chose?

Big Tech loves open data for the same reason thieves love an open door.

Interesting how Big Tech loves open data but only provides proprietary APIs in return… I wonder why that is?

If you have to ask why anyone would carry out life-saving research if they didn’t stand to reap great financial profit from it, your system is fundamentally broken.

Just published Google lawsuit evidence indicates that like always retained users' location data, even if disabled in user interface, to the extent that its own employees flashed LineageOS on their phones to avoid tracking. Full thread on twitter.com/jason_kint/status/

So the Stripe API docs show you the actual data from your last test call as the documentation example.

What a thoughtful feature.

Everyone should understand that #Bitcoin is not the currency of the internet, IPv4 addresses are. And they're going up in price...

Show thread

There is obviously a shortage of these IP addresses and the long term solution is to replace the whole internet with IPv6, which is not likely to happen anytime soon. Because: the ones that own the internet links that we need to connect to also own the IP addresses.

Show thread

This is a political problem. Politicians go on about helping the small companies and promoting digitalisations. Small companies can't even offer digital solutions not based on centralised services because of the most valuable resource is owned and controlled by someone else.

IPv4 addresses used to be gratis. Today they're selling for ~40 USD each. Ford (!!) got 16.7 million IPs for free, hardly using them. Today they're worth $670M, a better value increase than any crypto currency. At the same time new ISPs can't be started because lack of IPs.

I feel like there's an ideological cold war out there in tech (and possibly in tech education) between

1. "computers MUST be fully user-programmable or a massive social disaster will occur on the order of Fascism and Communism, but now with pervasive surveillance"

2. "computers are far too dangerous to allow users to control, so they MUST be centrally managed and filtered by a genius tech elite".

I stand firmly in camp 1.

Whenever I see people espousing Camp 2 ideas, I shiver and run.

I wrote an extensive blog post explaining the reasons for dropping Startpage and switching to Mojeek.

Making something useful doesn’t require genius. You simply have to be just reckless enough to get started, just smart enough to understand the problem, just dumb enough not to overcomplicate the solution, and just stubborn enough to keep going until you get there.

TIL the city of Stockholm, led by Moderates, spent hundreds of millions on building proprietary "school platform" software, which took 6 years to ✌️complete✌️ and still sucks now, 9 years since they started.
Some computer-savvy parents made an open source alternative that people use instead, since it actually works and doesn't fail to log in 6 times out of 10 because the proprietary software peddlers don't understand async programming.

Just setting up my Mastodon!
Looks like a better place.

My PinePhone arrived in #Tokyo before 2 weeks and I tried #Manjaro and #Mobian - both OS are very impressiv. Development speed and community very friedly. I would like to see more Linux smartphones in the future.
