Today is the day. I hope...Should have been yesterday but had a nap instead. Migrating I'll try to write blog post as I go so I can post that today as well. Hope everyone has a great Sunday

Yes !

selfhosting is way to sustainability.

@mgrondin

@noorul that it is. Just wish I was not migrating my next cloud instance for the second time in a month...should have gotten a bigger VPS when I moved it from my PC...

Just like, self hosting is essential, hosting on local home server is even better.

Upgrading space is trouble I guess

@mgrondin

@noorul I actually prefer not hosting locally. Then I can have one setup for all devices and have access all the time.

I use cloud storage. Nextcloud for sharing files, receiving & contact/calendar sync.

I just rsync between deceives

@mgrondin

@mgrondin
Self hosting is great for cost and controlling your data. I host my own Nextcloud and love it. I am always very concerned with availability though. Home internet goes down or a minor hardware failure and I am dead in the water.
@noorul

haha,

true. but some data is critical, then cloud storage is a way to go.

by the way, u running Nextcloud on home server?

@jakepi @mgrondin

@noorul
Yup. I have a little i3 Intel NUC running Debian that I have my Nextcloud instance running on. For a single user in a home environment it is pretty sweet! Plenty of power.
@mgrondin

I've #BeagleBoneBlack for home server.

Not hosting Nextcloud locally.

Rsync is my thing.

@jakepi @mgrondin

@noorul

What about mobile? I mostly use Nextcloud so I can sync data between my desktop and phone.

Never heard of the Beagle Bone, looks neat.

@jakepi

That's true. Was part of my reason for moving to a VPS. Also i wanted to start hosting more things(Peertube,rss...) and open it up a bit so did not want all that on my home network.

@noorul

@mgrondin
Self hosting does stop me from adding more services. Any VPS you recommend? Security is a good point, I get people knocking on my Nextcloud daily. I don't need anymore holes.
@noorul

What is your current VPS provider ?

VPS or cloud hosting?

Digitalocean
Vultr
Ovh

@jakepi @mgrondin

@jakepi
I went with Contabo(contabo.com/) because they where the cheapest i could find. Now at the cheap price they provide no management of the server. They just give you root access and you are on your own for the rest. But I'm ok with that. using iptables to just block anyone who tries to knock. They are located in germany which is far from me so sometimes speed is low but i'm also ok with that as i don't normally upload large files.

@noorul

@noorul @jakepi

Have not had it go down yet. It's been about 1 month. I did see them post about doing some maintenance on some hosts but not mine and the maintenance lasted all of 45 minutes from what i could see.

@mgrondin
Maybe I will make the switch. 300GB should be fine. Have you ever upgraded storage? Do they just resize the VHD and it is up to you from there?
@noorul

@jakepi @noorul it depends. When I decided to upgrade it was either a fresh start or they could migrate for me at a cost. I decided to pay for the new container and migrate at my leisure. Did not ask about just upgrading storage I moved up a level. From the S SSD to the M SSD
