It's time to go back and check out XMPP. I haven't used it in a very long time. As far as I can remember, when I was a teen I used FB messaging with XMPP on my low end phone so that I didn't had to rely on bloated FB app or FB messenger. However soon after that FB stopped supporting XMPP.
