We pay to Steam, Netflix, Amazon prime, Spotify. But not to Wikipedia, Archive.org, Librivox, Project Gutenberg, for our favourite Linux distro.

The huge asymmetry between corporate and community has not emerged naturally. It is a product of our choices of not supporting community oriented projects.

The short conveniences vs the long-term good. We always chose the former.

In face of surveillance capitalism, we must and must change.

Pinephone Pro Explorers Edition preorders open now and shipping late January.

Very good #Tusky news: I just merged the pull request I was working on for the last months
👉 Complete refactoring of the timeline loading logic (which is basically the heart of the app) with Kotlin & coroutines
👉 Squashed some bugs within the timeline
👉 Code is now way cleaner than before, which should make adding new features faster and bugs easier to spot

Unfortunately Mastodon's default interface doesn't allow you to follow hashtags.

It would be great if this feature was added to standard Mastodon. If you agree, please give a thumbs up 👍 to this issue on the Mastodon git:

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

NOTE: Hashtag following doesn't mean changing the way federation works. Following hashtags could be just limited to showing posts that are already visible from that instance anyway.

The idea isn't to show every tagged post everywhere on the Fedi, but just to save the user the bother of having to repeatedly search for interesting hashtags manually.

This has already been implemented on e.g. Friendica, which is part of the ActivityPub Fediverse.

While it's unlikely everyone is going to want to run servers, even if only 1% DO, that's still going to be many thousands of times more choices than you get with a single-silo platform like Twitter or Facebook serving the whole world, and still escapes the monopoly supplier issue.

So it's more about making it attractive to a 1% tech-savvy fraction of the community. I think that's probably an achievable goal.

Fediverse, we hope to have a hacker camp in the Netherlands this Summer (yes, COVID-willing), do propose your talks at cfp.mch2022.org and here's an additional blogseries on what we're looking for: mch2022.org/#/Blog/stuff-we-li #MCH2022 (boosts are most welcome)

moxie seems to believe there are only two options for how services can be hosted: self-hosting or commercial hosting.

completely ignoring community hosting.

that reinforces my feel that community hosting is one of the biggest advantages of fedi.

(he is absolutely right that #web3 is crap, of course)

Liebes #Fediverse !
